The SS package for 1970 was carried over from the first generation Camaro. When you ordered RPO-Z27, you got the 350-300hp engine. Optional engines the SS included the 396-350hp & 396-375hp engines, which were actually 402 cu in for 1970. Also included were dual exhausts, power brakes, hood insulation, F70x14 bias belted white lettered tires on 14x7 wheels, black painted grille, hideaway wipers, SS emblems on the steering wheel, fenders, and grille. (Available with 4 speed Muncie or 3 speed hydramatic only). The 4 speed Muncies came equipped with a Hurst shifter. SS396 had black painted rear panel and F41 performance suspension. The 350-300 and 402-350 had cast iron intake manifolds and Quadrajet carburetors. The 402-375 had an aluminum intake and Holley 4 bbl. All SS Camaros in 1970 had 12 bolt rear ends.
For 1971, Chevy reduced compression ratios of all high performance engines, so the SS350 produced 270hp. The SS396 offered only one engine, the LS3, rated at 300hp. The 12 bolt rear end was no longer available. Sport mirrors were added as part of the SS.
1972 was the final year for the SS Camaro. Engine offerings were the same as 1971, but horsepower ratings were changed to net ratings, so it appeared that horsepower was down. The 350 was rated at 200 net horsepower, while the 402 had 240 net hp.
